I knew it wouldn't be long before they found the...

MUD in the backyard. Several weeks ago, I sent them out to play while I finished fixing dinner. They were playing so well together and it was quiet, so I knew something was up. I went outside and found them playing in the portion of the yard that is waiting for some kind of pavers or flagstone. I think the grass had just been watered so there was some fresh mud.
Usually, I would have stopped them right away and been upset that I had to clean up a muddy mess. (Yes, I am that kind of mom, but working on trying to relax more.) But then I realized they were already muddy and having so much fun. Why should I ruin it? So I let them continue to play and go crazy with the mud.

It finally came to a stop when the mud was in their hair and on their face. I'm sure Katelyn tried to eat some too. I think they were also done at this point and happily undressed and came in to be cleaned up. I love how happy they look in this picture and that I relaxed and let them have this kind of fun. I must have been in a really good mood this day, because if it happened today, the outcome may have been different. :) Yes, I have been a grouch today and woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

For the record, I lived with you for like 2 years and have never seen you grouchy!

I really can't imagine you grouchy. I would pay good money to see that. Seriously - I do NOT believe it.

Hooray for mud! I always have that internal fight with myself when I see my kids getting into something really messy - let them do it, or get them to FREEZE THIS INSTANT! Sometimes I let them have fun, other times I'm just too tired to let them roll in the mudd, tee hee. But I guess getting messy is part of the fun of being a kid.

As a little kid, Kevin used to love to play and dig in the mud in our backyard with his toy bulldozers, front-end loaders, wheelbarrows, etc.. Judging by your new backyard, he apparently still does. Luke's wife will thank you some day if you foster his love of digging and moving dirt.

Oh believe me Kerry and Sue, I was grouchy today. It seemed like everything my kids did was so irritating to me and poor Luke probably got the brunt of it. I think part of it has to do with being in the house most of the week. My kids have bad coughs and so we haven't done much and I really can't go too many places being this pregnant w/out my back aching or feet swelling. :)
Mom,
Kevin has told me about his love for playing in the mud and dirt. I do hope Luke has the same love of working hard and getting dirty like his dad.

Ahh!! I remember those days. I'm sure you are at the very uncomfortable part of your pregnancy and running after kids is super hard when you just want to sit down and put your feet up. I'm sorry that your kids are sick. That is no fun. I hope you don't get it. Cute pics.

Hey jess,
this is Amy, I know shocking I am actually posting something:) Anyways, this made me smile because the exact thing happened to me the other day. I took Cali and Camden to the park because i wanted to wear them out. But all they wanted to do was play in the mud and build a "castle". I normally would've stopped it right away but then I saw how happy they were and i was like "what the heck!" Camden did start eating it multiple times and I heard him crunching on rocks so that is when I stepped in:)

Aw, the mud puddles. You are such a good mommy to let them play in it. I am more like the "other" you that you described. The one that would have stopped them immediately and asked what on earth they were thinking. I need to relax more too, I LOVED playing in the mud when I was little. My poor Mom.

Good to hear that you are "that kind of Mom" too. I usually get upset when my kid's fun involves a mess. What a perfect example of letting a little mess happen. They couldn't look happier with life in that picture! By the way, I can't imagine you grouchy either.

Don't you love it when you are enjoying the silence and it hits you-- It's TOO quiet! At least the pictures came out cute!

Jess & Jodi- I am totally "that kind of mom" too. I feel bad sometimes and am working on it. I'm glad I'm not alone.

Katelyn's hair is SO LONG! Sorry, that had nothing to do with the post, I'm just awed.

I sometimes have to remind myself that it's okay if Jules gets dirty. She's washable. Good for you for letting her.

Okay that is nothing. I need to e-mail you a picture of my brother and sister when they were young and got in the mud. We're all sick so maybe one of these days we can get our boys together to play...

Why is it that kids can have fun all laid out for them and they find the Mud... This was like our Sat. Jake was so surprised that I told him he could get his clothes wet.

I'm "that kind of mom," too. It's so hard to let that go. My only consolation about letting kids make messes is that they make great photo ops :)
